Bay Area Solar Installation Report - 2009 |
The 2009 Bay Area Solar Installations (BASI) Report is NorCal Solar’s third report since the implementation of the 2007 California Solar Initiative (CSI). It is promising to see increases in solar photovoltaic (PV) installations despite the economic downturn. The steady upward trend shows that Californians remain more dedicated than ever to meeting their energy needs with an environmentally sound energy source. Over 273 megawatts of PV have been installed in California since 2007. Nowhere in California is commitment to renewable energy stronger than in the Bay Area: 40 percent of those 273 megawatts were installed here. In number of installations, statewide close to 25,000 new PV systems came into existence of which 46 percent are in the Bay Area.
We are pleased to report that within our 10 Bay Area counties, the regional trend for calendar year 2009, taken alone, shows that 61 percent of the total state’s PV installations and 55% of the state’s total megawatts occurring in the Bay Area. This region‘s success reflects an inspiring collaboration of business, residents, and utilities working together to make the San Francisco Bay Area a leader in pursuing a cleaner, safer and more reliable energy future.

2009 Bay Area Solar Installation Data will be released on the evening of July 14th, 2010
California has offered financial incentives for grid-tied solar electric systems (PV) since 1998, and in January 2007, the state implemented a new incentive program through the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) called the California Solar Initiative (CSI). The CSI is a ten-year $2.2 billion incentive program with the goal of installing 1,940 megawatts of solar power on the equivalent of one million rooftops. The CSI has been a much heralded program due to its size, length, and cutting-edge policy goal of establishing a sustainable solar industry. It is administered by Pacific, Gas & Electric (PG&E) in Northern California.
