Presentation: To lower greenhouse gas emissions we need to stop burning fossil fuels, not only in cars and power plants, but also in homes and businesses. Switching to using all electric appliances is a great way to do this, particularly as grid electricity gets cleaner and cleaner. This movement toward “electrification” is growing rapidly, and our speakers will cover relevant new laws and policies and give details on programs being implemented around the Bay Area. Come join the discussion about heat pumps, induction cooking, PV + EV + batteries systems, and the challenges of implementing such a major shift in energy usage.

Speakers: Rachel Golden, Sierra Club and Rachel Kuykendall, Sonoma Clean Power

Rachel Golden is a policy expert and senior campaigner working to support California’s transition to clean energy. Rachel leads the Sierra Club’s building electrification campaign, where she works with a team of attorneys, analysts, grassroots organizers, and media experts to win comprehensive policies that support electrification, and that prioritize low-income residents and workforce development.  Rachel has a broad background in energy policy having covered energy efficiency, renewable energy, and transportation electrification policies in the public, non-profit, and philanthropic sectors. She has Masters degrees in Public Policy and Energy Resources from University of California, Berkeley.

Rachel Kuykendall is Sonoma Clean Power’s Programs Manager. She is responsible for program design and implementation in the areas of DERs, energy efficiency, demand response, electric vehicles, and other areas that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support affordable energy for Sonoma Clean Power customers. Rachel currently manages Sonoma Clean Power’s Demand Response Program, as well as the Advanced Energy Rebuild Program which supports homeowners affected by the 2017 North Bay wildfires.

Members Receive a Discount for PV Solar Recycling & NorCal Solar Receives a Donation!

To further our mutual goals, NorCal Solar has established a new and exciting partnership with Recycle PV Solar (RPVS), a company based near Lake Tahoe, Nevada.  RPVS is dedicated to keeping solar PV panels out of landfills by re-purposing those that can be reused, and recycling all other solar panels in an environmentally conscience way.

Dismantling and recycling PV panels has a cost. RPVS is now offering a discounted recycling and processing fee of $16 per solar panel for NorCal Solar members (regular price: $25). This fee covers the cost of recycling the metals, glass, and other components in PV. As an added bonus, RPVS will make a $1 donation to NorCal Solar per panel. If you’d like to take advantage of this opportunity and are not already a member of NorCal Solar, please click here for membership info. If you want more info about recycling solar panels or are ready to send some panels for recycling, you can start the process by filling out this online application form.

The national Solar Energy Industries Association and the Solar Industry Associations of Colorado (COSEIA) and Arizona (AriSEIA) are also working with Recycle PV Solar to promote solar panel recycling. Though solar panels have a life expectancy of 25 years or more, experience shows us that not all installations survive to maturity for a variety of reasons: they suffer damage in transport or installation or by extreme weather and fire, they have manufacturing defects, or they have been taken out of service to be replaced by newer and more efficient technologies.

We are thrilled that this partnership enables NorCal Solar to support a true circular solar economy which ensures that our resources are not simply used once and thrown away, but instead are repurposed to their fullest extent. This effort is vital for the solar industry to become truly sustainable, and we encourage our members to take advantage of this new opportunity. More info about Recycle PV Solar can be found in PV Magazine.

Remembering Darren Malvin, Former NorCal Solar Board Member

By Elaine Hebert

DARREN MALVIN Obituary

In January, 2019, we mourned the passing of former NorCal Solar board member Darren Malvin, of American Solar Corp. in Marin County. He was Vice President of NorCal Solar when I was President around 2010-11. Darren was a wonderful human being: fair-minded, level-headed, caring. My impression was that he had a big effect in Marin, really promoting PV and installing many systems there and around the Bay Area. His photo appeared in several ads in solar magazines for Quick Mount PV - you may have seen it. Claudia Wentworth (of Quick Mount, and also formerly of the NorCal Solar board) and I attended his memorial service together… a sad but wonderful event. The room was more than overflowing, a testament to how much his community loved him. He died trying to help people during a storm. He was 52. There’s a full obituary here. It states, “The family would be grateful for donations made in Darren’s name to the Homestead Valley Community Association
